Fossil Mountain

So does it exist? We've heard stories about it. They're everywhere and they're huge! Yeah yeah. But where are they? Fossil mountain where are you?

Well, they are here ! Right under our noses, almost.

We've walked to this headland before, it sort of finishes and drops down towards the sea. There is a lot of erosion here and that's the key. The layers of history are bared to us, geologically speaking and once we descend to the right layer, our treasure is uncovered.

The hunt is on and Krysia can hardly contain herself as we carefully explore the spur of the hill, which at times gets quite steep so a bit of 'Hand Gliding' is in order. The wind is quite strong here so there is plenty of lift !! Mmmmm

And at last we 'land' on prime fossil territory, hundreds of them, in fact the stones here are more fossil than stones? But then fossils are stone so....... mmmmm, anyway, depositing herself in the middle of a 'graveyard' of  amonite pieces, Krysia is like a child in a sweet shop. A very happy bunny and she wants them all, in fact the whole mountainside would be good  !!!

We are not the first ones to discover this site by a long shot, rumour has it that a french couple were extracting them by the ton, reassembling them into arty pieces and selling them to people who like to buy that sort of thing. The buyers no longer want to buy, so the sellers have departed leaving their 'mining slag heaps of fossil remain,s there for all to see.

And doesn't Krysia look happy. It's nice to see Krysia looking happy. Hammer and chisel in hand, tonnes of fossils to be had, better than any gift shop that's for sure.

And here she is with Bostjan, showing off their prized pieces. Bostjan is from Slovenia and although he has been in the campsite for as long as we have, he takes his time getting to know people. We thought that maybe he couldn't speak any English or was very shy! But neither is true, he speaks great English and in the last few days, he's come out of his solitude and become another friend to remember. So we told him about Fossil Mountain and he joined us on one of our three visits, as Krysia just couldn't get enough pieces the first time !

Fossil Mountain, you have been here all along and all we needed to do was open our eyes before we tripped over them ! ( And know where they were of course. )

Enjoy the photos, we'll show you the fossils when we get back. Lots of love from two old Fossils!
